Gertrude Stein
1878 - 1946
Gertrude Stein was an avant-garde author and salon lady with a stately girth and self-confidence. She saw herself as a female Picasso of literature and tried her hand at cubism in words - at first, however, with little success. During the First World War, she cruised through France with her partner in a Ford, visited hospitals in fantasy uniforms and tinkered with the rhythm of her repetitive texts while driving in the passenger seat. In the twenties, she and her brother organised a living room salon in Paris, where the avant-garde and the bohemian soon joined hands.
lyrics
Everybody wants to be
A guest in her salon de the
Artist writer bohemians
Stood in line to be a part
Of her weekly social meetings
In her rue de fleur apartement
She was the sibyl de montparnass
And she like to kick peoples ass
Gertrude stein – always ahead of her time – but only in her mind
Her writing it was crazy
But her agent he was lazy
And so it took her quite a while
Till her reputation gained in style
Her appearnce it was big
But Her confidence was bigger
She saw herself in just one line
With picasso, and albert einstein
