Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven
1874--1927
The German baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven lived in poor circumstances on New York's Lower East Side and tried to keep her head above water as a dancer, muse and painter. She performed expressive dances on the smallest of stages, often with a birdcage on her head and in a bra made of tin cans, and was probably something like the Lady Gaga of her time. She was a friend of Marcel Duchamp, among others. It was she who suggested that he hang a urinal in a gallery. Duchamp's invention founded - if you like - modernism, he became world famous with it, but she died in obscurity and almost forgotten.
lyrics
Once upon a time in the lower east side
Long before the first world war
A girl climbs up on a tiny stage
To show a few moves of her own repertoire
She carries a birdcage instead of a hat
And her bra was made out of tuna cans
Her wild eclectic dancing style
Drove all the bohemians wild
Elsa you dance like nobody Elsa -It is true what everyone tells ya
You are the dada princess
Art is life and life is art
but sometimes its not all that smart
See Elsa’s friend - the mighty Duchamp
He was the king of the demimonde
He stole the idea with the urinal
To hang it in the middle of the gallery wall
He ws the artist - she was the muse
He got the fame and she got the blues
